BOWL, polychrome flower design on a black background

9~10th century
Height:6.5cm
Mouth-rim diameter:21.4cm

This bowl has a pale brown clay body, covered with black slip onto which flowers are depicted by dotting the white slip, red and green pigments. It is then covered with a transparent glaze with a slightly yellowish tinge. The dotted white, red and green make a sharp contrast with the black background, effectively producing a distinctive design. It is considered to have been produced in the Northern east area of Iran, mainly Nishapur, while similar pieces have also been found in Central Asia.
