Chinese Ceramics of the Hakuto-ro Collection
The Hakuto-ro collection is a donation by a collector living in Nara prefecture, comprising 104 pieces of ceramics and three pieces of Chinese craft works. Having a profound knowledge of Chinese art and culture, the collector devoted half a lifetime forming this collection that covers a wide range of chronology and a variety of techniques. Each fascinating piece reflects the uncompromising connoisseurship and aesthetic sensibilities of the collector. Our museum held an exhibition of this collection in 2003, displaying 58 selected pieces from the whole donation. Today, the collection has been enriched by an additional generous donation of 32 pieces of Chinese ceramics and one piece of Chinese craft work from the collector. This exhibition introduces about 30 pieces, selected mainly from the newly donated items. I hope you will enjoy the superb works including the white ware from the Longshan culture of the Neolithic period, the green-and-yellow glazed ware from the Northern Wei period and the celadon from the Southern Song period, all of which were acquired through the discern eyes of the collector. The term Hakuto, referring to oak tree, appears in Japanese ancient historical literature and poems. It had been a synonym for the old village Heguri (present-day Heguri-cho, Ikoma-gun, Nara Prefecture). Hakuto-ro, meaning “a hermitage in Heguri”, was named after the location of the collector’s residence.
